Winterization is a form of preventive maintenance for vehicles in colder climates. A combination of low temperatures, salted roads, and inclement weather will take a toll on any vehicle; this is especially true in Fairbanks.
The term winterization in Fairbanks is different from other places, due to the extreme temperatures in Alaska. It is best described as follows: When temperatures drop below zero (we recommend plugging in at any temperature under 20° above zero), your vehicle's systems may not operate properly. Depending on how cold it is, your vehicle may not start at all.
At Ken's Fairbanks Alignment, we offer a package that will ensure your vehicle starts at our cold temps and prevents damage to your engine, transmission, and battery.
There are 4 major components of the winterization package:
Engine block heater- this heater is installed directly into an existing port in the engine block, and it heats the block through either a dry socket or through the antifreeze to keep it at a more reasonable temperature to make sure it does not freeze.
Engine oil pan heater- this heater is installed directly onto the engine oil pan. When cold enough, engine oil gets highly viscous (thick) and it is harder for the engine's internal components to move. Starting an engine with highly viscous oil can cause damage to internal components. This heater keeps the oil heated and at a lower viscosity.
Transmission pan heater- this heater is installed directly onto the transmission oil pan. It performs the same function as the engine oil heater but for the transmission to prevent internal damage to the transmission.
Battery pad heater or battery trickle charger- Batteries freeze solid and the internal acids will expand and crack the outer shell of the battery at extreme temps. By installing a pad heater onto the side of the battery, it will keep the battery warm, preventing this issue. Another option is a battery trickle charger, which sends a small charge to the battery that also keeps it warm in the process.
We also ensure the freezing point of the antifreeze is set to -50° and install a 4 way electrical box to tie all the components together, leaving one cord that is accessible through the grill for you to plug into your house. Each night, when the temperate drops, you will plug in to make sure you can get your car started the next day.
Winterization is an essential part of maintenance in Fairbanks, ensuring your vehicle has everything it needs to continue starting and running when temperatures drop below 20°. Winterization allows for a safer driving experience and gives you the peace of mind you need behind the wheel.
